Vestiges
Welcome to VESTIGES
"I’m a maximalist inspired by New York City, its cross cultures, color, and energy. I find it more of a creative challenge to work from a place of no limitation, where more is more, rather than to work within the confines of “less is more”. I believe everything builds on everything and what we see and feel around us. And as you go through life, you come across different “teachers”. Some teach you survival skills, some life lessons, and some even inspire you. If you pay attention, you’ll find that all these lessons are there to guide you.
Having traversed the streets of NYC for years, I've poured my experiences and personal connections into each artwork, creating a vivid expression of the city's diverse districts. From the bustling energy of Times Square to the serene beauty of Central Park, every piece reflects my perspective shaped by my time as an artist and resident.
These artworks are exclusive to 'Vestiges,' ensuring their rarity and significance to collectors. I invite you to immerse yourself in the collection and discover the magic of New York City through my eyes. Thank you for joining me on this exhilarating chapter of my artistic exploration."
"Lisa Beth Older's art reflects the vibrant energy, rich cultural diversity, and ever-changing nature of New York City."
Lisa
Lisa Beth Older is an abstract artist deeply fascinated by the intricacies of texture and the interaction of layers within her work. Renowned for her distinctive style, "Bend & Blend," Older intricately manipulates layers of paint using knives, brushes, and handmade tools to achieve mesmerizing three-dimensional relief effects. Through her technique, she leaves traces of vestiges beneath the surface, inviting viewers to explore unseen depths and imagine hidden narratives.
In her artistic journey, Older reflects on the parallels between art and life, acknowledging that, like exposed inner parts of ourselves, some aspects of her creations remain unconcealed. She believes that each viewer brings their unique perspective, completing the image of who she is as an artist and what her paintings encapsulate.
For Older, the process of creation is both exhilarating and challenging. She admits that stopping the creative flow can be the most difficult part, but recognizes when a piece speaks to her, signaling its completion. Embracing imperfection as part of the creative process, she emphasizes the importance of tapping into the raw energy of expression over contemplation, believing it to be the essence of true artistry. Through her work, Older channels the fierce life force within, transcending the boundaries of perfection to create art that resonates deeply with the soul.
Biography
NYC-based Chelsea artist Lisa Beth Older is an abstract action painter born in Hartford, Connecticut, who has been exhibiting and selling art for nearly two decades. Her work can be found in three museums, with two Presidential families, and in numerous prominent private collections.
Lisa lost her mother to breast cancer when she was only six years old. Growing up in Florida, she was sent to live with various relatives and individuals. At 16, she took to the road, eventually landing in California, where she lived in a teepee in the mountains, painting, writing poetry, and playing guitar. “Pain felt natural to me, but art was my ultimate medicine.”
She joined LA’s Comedy Store as an MC, studying acts like Robin Williams, Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, and Andy Kaufman. Eventually, she performed alongside Williams and Kaufman, and as a stand-up comedian, she opened for rock bands like the Circle Jerks. She became a regular act at the Comedy Store’s Belly Room and collaborated with Kaufman in his iconic wrestling act. Later, she toured, moved to New York City, and joined venues like the Comic Strip, Rodney Dangerfield’s, and Catch a Rising Star.
Although she minored in creative arts at UCLA, Lisa Beth is primarily a self-taught artist. In the 1980s, she lived for four years in the East Village on Avenue A, where she trained with abstract artist Fredda Mekul, who became her mentor. Lisa Beth was an integral part of the East Village art scene, hosting art parties that attracted crowds of creative people, including her lifelong friend Joey Ramone. The energy, consumerism, and cultural diversity of New York City are reflected in her visceral, tactile art.
As an abstract painter fascinated by texture and layers, she developed her signature Bend & Blend style. She feels it's important to preserve and carry on the American tradition of Abstract Expressionism. Inspired by artists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Lee Krasner—comparisons that continue to amaze her—Lisa Beth believes those who admire these artists will likely appreciate her work as well. “I like to think that I continue to build on their advancements and legacy.
